Broad beans or Valyache Curry

Ingredients to keep ready:

  • 2 cups Broad beans or Valyache (soaked overnight)
  • Oil for cooking
  • 1/2 teaspoon Jeera
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon hing
  • 5 Curry leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 Chopped onion
  • 3 kokum petals / 1 tablespoon Kokum syrup
  • 1 teaspoon jaggery
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala.

For Curry Paste:

  • 5 Garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon chopped ginger
  • 1 green chilli (whole)
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • some peppercorn
  • 1 /2 sliced onion
  • 1/2 cup of dry coconut powder
  • Chopped coriander leaves.
  • 1 cup Water

Preparation Method:

Peel, wash & keep aside Broad beans or Valyache aside.

In a pressure cooker, heat oil add jeera, add mustard seeds let it crackle, add hing , add curry leaves.

Add chopped onion & sautΓ© till it turns brown.

Add turmeric powder, add red chilli powder.

SautΓ© well with little water to avoid masala being burned.

Add Broad beans or Valyache and sautΓ© for 5 minutes.

Add the grinded paste in it.

SautΓ© till oil separate’s.

Add water & pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles.

After the pressure cooker cool down, add kokum petals / kokum syrup, add jaggery, add garam masala.


Check the gravy consistency (as per your desired)

Add salt to taste.

Give it a nice boil.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Serve it hot.
